The SoucChef is an interactive cookbook, which combines increasing education, ability, and awareness with showing the user that home-cooking can be simple, fun, fast, and creative.

The Challenge
To design an object, interface, system or service – to help us share awareness, understanding or appreciation for our domestic experience as it relates to space, place and threshold.

Problem Scope
Students eat unhealthy. How can we help students become independent adults?
Enjoy cooking at home. Help them build confidence in own cooking abilities.

Target Group
Our target audience is young adult users who are missing the domestic experience of home-cooking. Young students who are away from home and are inexperience with cooking. Students who want to cook. We assumed that students are at the threshold of their lives. We created a hypothesis that stated that with the right use of technologies, students would be able to achieve their goals.

User Goals
To conserve time
Stay within a budget
Stay healthy
Must stay motivated

User Expectations
Simple and easy to make
Novel and tasty
Enjoyable and varied aesthetically pleasing.

Methods
We used 4 methods (photo diary, semi structured interviews, competitive analysis and contextual inquiry)

Three concepts were created and evaluated by the members of the group. These concepts were used to collate ideas and insights through research.

Paper prototyping was employed to test the variations. The users were encouraged to think aloud giving qualitative feedback. The design variations were consolidated. The concept was internally reviewed using Gestalt Principles, Heuristics, etc

In order to design the final version of the interface, the team combined characteristics of existing solutions to enhance the features of the prototype. Potential users solved a specific task to validate the final version. The user was asked to use the application while cooking.

Concept – The SousChef
The SoucChef is an interactive cookbook, which combines increasing education, ability, and awareness with showing the user that home-cooking can be simple, fun, fast, and creative.

The SousChef is a new way of presenting recipes in order to augment the experience of home-cooking for users who may have constraints such as inexperience, uncertainty, distraction, unawareness, and lack of time. We’re aiming to do this by providing mixed media options in our recipes such as videos and audio feedback.

Scenario
The user adds ingredients from their own kitchen, either by inputting text or by taking a photo; and the second is to choose from a list of available dishes via search or browse. All recipes included will be healthy and simple (with complexity ratings based on number of steps and number of ingredients; and all nutritional information available). For the first option, the user can input ingredients they have (and add/delete ingredients as they go to reduce or expand recipe options) and the app will suggest dishes based on that input.

Unique Selling Point
The application targets a specific audience, unlike the competitors in the industry. A concept such as the ‘sous chef’ allows infrequent users to cook more often and frequent users to get quick tips and advice. This provides a stickiness factor to the application when out in the market. Students become independent adults and stay motivated by showing their dishes to friends and family.

The service concept, The key was developed for the Centre for Health Innovation, as part of The Katalyst Summer School in Service design and service Innovation, August 2011.

The summer School in service design and service innovation was a three-week innovation process in which students from University of Copenhagen , The Technical University of Denmark and Copenhagen Business School solved specific service challenges for selected client. Participants worked in interdisciplinary teams and were guided and challenged by innovation and process leaders, anthropologists, rhetoricians, designers, philosophers and many more.

Task
The task was to enhance the cancer patients’ skills in relation to live with the illness.
To clarify an improvement in the quality of live for patient and relatives while at the same time saving be resource saving for the health care.

Concept
The key is a service conceptthat adds the relationship and interaction between patient and health care a a new dimension in The key opens the closed door between patient and health care . It acts as a extra helping hand throughout the entire course of the illness. The patient will remain an active player rather than a passive spectator to his own illness.
An online website is the patient’s own updated patient chart. By allowing the patients access to their own data, they will the patients gain a greater insight into their own illness courses. An online website provides an overview and focuses the information from the hospital to each patient, hereby granting the patients to take control of their disease. Patients have the opportunity to share their thoughts about the experience and lessons learned with other patients.
Our solution builds on top of existing solutions and streamlines the communication between hospital and patient. It automates many administrative tasks and removes them from the health professionals.

An online calendar and booking system helps to make the process of booking future treatments more efficient and flexible. It may contribute to a rise inpatients attending their treatments on time which will have a positiveeconomic affectand The [e can be further amplified with the use of a SMS service which notifices patients about and can make their own qualified descisions regarding treatmentand This will help to establish greatertransparency in the health care.

For management, the increased efficiency of employees preserve and makepossible to offer a higher level of service for the same means and resources.

It gives relatives a tool that will increases their involvement, and an opportunity to acquire knowledge and in order to support the patient. the latter through a meeting with likeminded relatives on the site. This support and knowledge acquisition improves their ability to support their loved ones.

Patients have the opportunity to view updated information for patients such as records wherever and wheneverand It is clearly and simple to view whenwe have treatments and appointments are booked with the doctorandPatients are given the opportunity to learn from the experience of others and can make their own qualified descisions regarding treatmentand The opportunity to get support and read others’ experiences in the form of a communityand the ability to find relevant information in a easier understandable language allow for patient empowerment.

Design Assignment
Unicef is currently building a new innovation lab a few kilometres from their existing headquarters at Nordhavn – Copenhagen. The lab is supposed to be a space for creative sessions and meetings with internal and external partners in development of aid products and logistics.

The Innovation Lab will be a physical space where internal project participants as well as external such as companies and students can work together on Unicef projects. For this Innovation Lab Unicef wanted us to help them defining their Innovation Lab interior.

Design challenge
“Design an innovation-lab artifact that enables and promotes knowledge sharing and participation in innovation projects with internal and external partners”

The solution
IMPACT is a physical and virtual knowledge management system designed for communicating the progress on on-going projects. The purpose is twofold, both in providing the means for creative collaboration between UNICEF employees, students and other external partners but also for promoting the work done within the Innovation Lab.

IMPACT provides a set of tools and methods to share project results and progress, while allowing co-workers to comment and contribute to the project. IMPACT is based on a number of tiles that can be used to create, share and promote projects. The tiles can be placed in different configurations and when combined create a full size presentation.

The combination of tiles can be combined in various configurations, such as a wall display, on a table or in a cube. To support fast creation and structured layout only a limited amount of information can presented in each tile. The content is based on predefined templates, e.g. title, project description, problem statement, pictures, video etc. Creation of presentation is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle with a limited number of pieces. The restrictions ensure a good, fast design process and the user needs only to focus on the content.

As a promotional tool IMPACT is designed to inspire and engage people in the on-goings of the Innovation Lab. The tool is an eye-catcher and acts as a showcase of what UNICEF is currently working on. To attract people’s attention to a showcase in the cantina or to maintain people’s attention during a presentation, the product and its installation is both compelling and inviting.

Tiles
IMPACT consists of four different tiles: The whiteboard, blackboard, paper and interactive tile. The diver- sity of the various tiles makes it pos- sible to create many different setups, giving the user a large degree of freedom in choosing which elements to incorporate.

Whiteboard tile: The whiteboard and blackboard are designed to easily promote sketching, brainstorming and idea sharing and make change during the work process. They are perfectly suited for quick drawings and text in for example a brainstorm session.

Paper tile: Paper is a strong contender for writing and drawing, with great readability and the ability to use many different tools (pencils, pens, markers, etc.). Although screens have replaced paper in many situations, it is still the preferred tool for sketching out quick scenarios to many people. Should the user desire to print out important material, the paper frames support this use. If the user instead wants to minimise printing, the interactive tile is the solution

Interactive tile: The tile is used for creating and presenting content. The content also meant for the paper frame can be created, modified and displayed on the interactive tile using an iPad 2. The tile and its special engineered software can act as the memory of the project, where every tile created for the project can be accessed.

It is not a requirement to use the interactive tile to store every tile created in the project, but the tile can act as a content management system if the user desires this feature. The tile interfaces with Unicefs existing system and allows users to view or update the project on their computers.

Use cases

Creation: Unicef employees create a presentation by arranging the tiles and deciding the number, positions and shapes wanted. The chosen configurationwillsupportsthetypeof session and the content presented. The tool for creating the presentation is identical with the one showing it. This allows an employee and more important allows several employees working together to seeing the end result take shape.

Workshop: A creative session can take many forms and it is important that the tiles can be used in different ways to support those different activities. One situation could be a presentation with a follow up question or feedback session, another could be to present an idea for at new concept and then let the participants work on their own solution.

Promotion: The Innovation at Unicef stressed the need for promotion of innovation projects internally. For this purpose the tiles can be used for creating presentations of projects in the canteen or other busy places at the Unicef HQ.

Using the tiles in different scenarios from creation to promotion makes the employees familiar with its semantics and the employees can easily acquaint themselves with the points they raises. There are many uses of the tiles as a promotional tool and the idea is not to limit the use, but to allow a project group or company to develop their own practice. One scenario is to continue a creative session where others can participate even though the workshop has ended. Another is a project group that knows their limitations on a specific subject and actively chooses to get help from outsiders. The group will be able to highlight certain problems and or ask specific question to other employees.

Two credit card holder concepts made during my internship at Whomadeid. The client provided a design brief which included a cheap credit card holder for two cards. I had to explore different styles and concepts.

Sketching

Sketching different early designs.

Finalising the designs.

Concept #1

The first concept is designed to be very simple and user friendly . Two cards can easily be pushed out with a single thumb. Focus is on making it simple as possible to use the product and access the cards as possible.

The cards well protected and the holder can be produced in both steel and plastic which meets the need for a premium and a budget version.

Concept #2

The second concept protects the cards as much as possible. The removable top protects the cards from dirt and other things that can damage the magnetic strip and chip.

A company producing solenoid valves is facing a number of challenges concerning global competition. In some business areas competitors are launching new products and in other areas the company wishes to grow. Over the last decades increased complexity has been built into the product program and there is among top management expectations that complexity reduction will lead to cost reduction. It is at the moment unclear which means to apply, and so far there does not exist a complete overview describing the refrigeration and industry solenoid valves. My task although only theoretical to support the management team in creating a coherent overview and make recommendations concerning the future of the product program and the business. I developed a new product program based on a unified product platform that overcomes several key problems.

In march 2011 I wrote a paper for the 7th annual Student Interaction Design Research Conference (SIDeR ’11) called ’Enhancing Interaction through Product Service Systems‘.In the paper, it is discussed whether a product service system can enhance the use of a product and thereby compensate for certain features, and, if so, how this influences the interaction between user and product. This was done by reflecting on a concept developed to counter the limited mobility and flexibility of electric vehicles by engaging the users’ expectations and providing services to compensate for the absence of features. The concept is called InMotion and can be found on my webpage. Finally, the paper discusses the generality of the approach beyond the specific case of electric vehicles. The paper can be downloaded here.
