The Way We Live Next 3.0

At this year’s Nokia-looks-into-the-future event, The Way We Live Next 3.0 at Nokia’s main office in Helsinki Finland. Nokia’s research and development looks 5 years into the future and paints a picture of life and peoples phone behavior in 2015.

Although clearly just concepts at this point, the devices shown in the animated video paints a picture of how we’ll be using devices and services in the future. We’ll be connecting to a TV, to share TV watching experiences with people on the other side of the world, or even using the mobile device as a projector. Contextual awareness plays a big part too, with the device working together with the cloud, both pulling information down to the device, and also sending information back.

This is about everyday objects interacting with our devices. Using sensors, things like plants will be able to tell us what it needs (food, water etc), sending information to our device which in turn will relay it to us.

But in order to use the technology in this way we have to change our minds about sharing and privacy. In the future, the information we share over the Internet will change and evolve so the technology won’t be used in a intrusive way, but as an enabler. This will enable users to live a more spontaneous life, helping to snatch opportunities easily where the device and the service are doing all the heavy lifting, sorting through the masses of information and anticipating the user’s needs. Read more here.

I will soon show an application that I’m currently developing in cooperation with two other students at DTU. This application will gather information about the user’s whereabouts and doing, but in a very discrete and not intrusive way and present hints to the user’s friends in order to create opportunities where the users can interact and share events and activities. The application is uploaded and can be seen in projects – Context aware contact book.

About the Nokia video, its pretty cool by they should stop making all these future tech videos and start concentrating on building next gen devices NOW!
Also a lot of the data the assumed access to in the video, is stuff that people might not want to have logged on the great big old internet.
